Compare the 2020 Jeep Renegade and 2020 Kia Soul in Norwich, CT

As the initialism suggests, a great SUV should be defined by its sportiness and utility. And when it comes to blending these characteristics, no automaker does it better than Jeep. The smallest vehicle in its lineup, the Jeep Renegade, is no exception. This rugged yet refined subcompact crossover blends versatile cargo and passenger accommodations, agile handling, and excellent maneuverability. And to top it off, the Renegade epitomizes the Jeep brand's adventurous spirit, delivering off-road capability that no vehicle in its class can match.

When a vehicle so adeptly meets the expectations of a segment, it's bound to draw comparisons with class competitors. One such model is the 2020 Kia Soul, a roomy subcompact crossover with city-going sensibilities and a unique, funky design. However, despite its compelling attributes, a head-to-head matchup with Jeep Renegade reveals a few shortcomings.

Jeep Renegade vs. Kia Soul: Performance

  • Standard Engines: Under the hood, a standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder propels the Jeep Renegade with 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. The Kia Soul's base engine falls woefully short, achieving just 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque.

  • Optional Engines: The Jeep Renegade also offers a turbocharged 1.3-liter powerplant (standard on Limited and Trailhawk and optional on supporting tiers) that enhances acceleration and off-road capability with 210 pound-feet of torque. The Kia Soul offers a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, but it makes less torque (195 pound-feet) and is only equipped on the top GT-Line Turbo trim level.

  • Four-Wheel Drive: Every Jeep Renegade trim offers an available four-wheel-drive system for added confidence, control, and off-road capability. The Renegade Trailhawk comes standard with Active Drive Low four-wheel-drive and a Selec-Terrain® Traction Management system. The Kia Soul only comes with front-wheel drive.

  • Off-Road: You don't have to leave the asphalt to enjoy owning a Jeep Renegade, but it's nice to know you can if you want to. The Jeep Renegade Trailhawk lives up to its name, equipping a special 4x4 system, hill-descent control, skid plates, tow hooks, all-terrain tires, and more. Even in its standard configuration, the Renegade's purpose-tuned suspension and ample ground clearance give it more off-road capability than any model in its segment. The Kia Soul's low ground clearance, minimal torque, and lack of all-wheel drive keep it confined to paved streets and hard-packed gravel.

Jeep Renegade vs. Kia Soul: Accommodations

  • The Jeep Renegade offers cushioned front seats with a range of adjustments, and dual-zone automatic climate control is available on the base trim and standard on all others. Additionally, all trims offer Jeep's My Sky® Power Removable Sunroof as an option for a true open-air experience.

  • Conversely, the Kia Soul limits dual-zone automatic climate control and power seat adjustments to the very top trims. You can get a regular sunroof on the Soul, but it's limited to the GT-Line trim.

Jeep Renegade vs. Kia Soul: Technology

  • The Jeep Renegade and Kia Soul both feature a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an array of available advanced safety features.

  • The Renegade's Latitude and Limited trim levels offer the Advanced Technology Group package with adaptive cruise control and an automated parking system. The Kia Soul doesn't provide the convenience of a parking assist system. Furthermore, it relegates adaptive cruise control to the very top trim level.
